A/Prof Garett Smith is a General Surgeon with an interest in laparoscopic general, bariatric and upper gastrointestinal surgery.  He has provided care to patients from the North Shore, Northern Beaches and beyond for 15 years as a staff surgeon at Royal North Shore Hospital and Visiting Medical Officer at North Shore Private Hospital.

Garett performs laparoscopic surgery for gallstones and other gallbladder disease, inguinal and other abdominal wall hernias and other general surgical disorders.  Garett performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.

Along with Dr Steven Leibman, A/Prof Garett Smith has performed over 3,000 laparoscopic weight loss procedures through North Shore Weight Loss Surgery, a multidisciplinary clinic located at St Leonards. 

Garett completed his general surgical training in 1998 and undertook fellowship training in advanced laparoscopic surgery in Sydney, the United Kingdom and United States.  Garett received his Masters of Surgery by thesis from The University of Sydney in 2006.  Garett’s research interests include laparoscopic surgery for reflux and hiatus hernia, obesity surgery and oesophagogastric cancer care. 

Garett has previously been the chairman of the Sydney Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society and was founding secretary of the Australian and New Zealand Oesophagogastric Surgeons Association.  He has held a number of senior administrative posts and is currently a member of the Court of the Examiners of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.  Garett is clinical Associate Professor of surgery at the Northern Clinical School, University of Sydney.

Garett has 5 daughters, and is a patrolling surf lifesaver at Bilgola Beach.
